After Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) averted a government shutdown, a far right rebellion of 8 led by Matt Gaetz voted to remove him from Speaker of the House. Majority Leader Steve Scalise (La.),Rep. Jim Jordan (Ohio) and Majority Whip Tom Emmer (Minn.) tried and failed to secure the 217 votes needed to become speaker of the GOP-controlled House.
Even though early reports stated some republican congress members would not vote for a member that voted to overturn the 2020 elections results like Scalise and Jordon, all elected Mike Johnson. Johnson was a known architect within the far right movement to overturn the 2020 election results.
Mike Johnson led a campaign within congress to keep former President Trump in the White House after losing the 2020 election. Like his Confederate "great-great-great-grandfather Alfred, Mike Johnson was part of an attempt to oust the duly elected government of the United States and replace it with one more to his liking."
Mike Johnson repeatedly spread lies about Dominion voting machines and other conspiracy theories.
In December 2020, Mike Johnson led a lawsuit to challenge the election results in 4 states. It was rejected by the Supreme Court
